Director’s Note

Apart from my annual performance in Santaland Diaries, it's been over one year since I set foot in a theatre in a creative capacity. And I have to say that, when this project was presented to me, I was very excited for the opportunity to collaborate again. But I was also very nervous. What would it be like - now? How would it be different? Would there be a cloud of anxiety hanging over every rehearsal? How do we create art, safely, in a pandemic? How do we continue to connect with each other in the time of social distancing?

Luckily, Balloonacy had some of the answers to those questions.

The story is, at its core, a story of discovery. A curmudgeonly old man, living a life of solitude, has his world jolted by the appearance of a single red balloon. At first apprehensive, the balloon and the old man form a friendship that allows him to reclaim his sense of play, redeem his belief in connection, and restore his faith in love.

Our rehearsal atmosphere does look different, now. We wear masks. There's hand sanitizer everywhere. We stand apart. But thankfully, the heart of the creative process remains. I am so excited to share this piece of live theatre with all of you. I believe there are kernels of truth and flashes of recognition to be gleaned in both young audience members and adults. I hope they put a smile on your face; I hope they make you laugh; I hope they make you feel. But most of all, I hope they bring you peace. Even if just for forty minutes.

Thank you for supporting Raleigh Little Theatre and the live performing arts. It means the world to us.
