Director's Note

Thank you everyone for tuning in to watch our Divas! 2020 virtual show.

Usually, I would talk about how this all came together and how important the arts are in our local communities and across the nation. But instead, this is just going to be a love note to my second home and the people that inhabit it from time to time.

Raleigh Little Theatre welcomed me in a stormy time of my life many years ago. It fed my heart and my soul. It clothed my body in radiant garments to help me feel comforted and safe. The people here taught me and guided me to grow as an actor, a musician, a teacher and as a productive human being. It/They taught me to love all and to welcome love because I was worthy.

In this time of pandemic when we are all feeling a bit lost and lonely and starving mentally, emotionally and for some, physically, myself and many others are remembering the importance of the human connection and where we have experienced it at its best… Raleigh Little Theatre. And for those of us that have a home in theatre, here or anywhere, we know we can find that comfort, love, safety and human connection again in the theatre and the people that create it. That is what I have experienced all over again at Raleigh Little Theatre in the past 3 months.

The staff, the Divas and creative team that have literally built this show from scratch, experimenting, learning and teaching one another how to be a community with a common goal or mission, have given me that comfort, love, guidance, soul and heart food, once again. "Thank you" does not begin to tell you how I feel about this adventure we took into a brand new world of making live theatre… there simply are no words…

To those of you attending the virtual Divas! 2020 show and reading this letter, my hope is that you will not only be entertained and inspired to donate, but you will feel all the love and excitement and growth and passion that this cast and crew has felt and expressed in making the magic of live theatre.

Thank you for your support of Raleigh Little Theatre. Please donate generously and enjoy Divas! 2020 Virtual Show.

History of Divas!

In 2004, the idea for a fundraiser for RLT originated “out of a conversation between myself and Amy Flynn,” says Sandi Sullivan. “We were discussing the fact that many people thought other actresses and myself didn’t get along because we often found ourselves competing for the same roles. In fact, the opposite was true. I had great respect for the other actresses. Then the idea to start a fake fight between myself and these other women began to run through my mind... and the idea for Divas! was born.”

“The idea was this… there were so many talented actors in the theatre community competing for so few roles, why not give them a chance to shine on stage together and raise some money in the process?” Sandi felt that they could provide their own “costumes,” perform without a set, use basic lighting, and have minimal rehearsal. Therefore, the money from the ticket sales for the evening would all be profit. The audience could vote for their favorite Diva of the evening with money and raise funds for RLT while enjoying an entertaining evening of cabaret performances.

Since 2004, Divas! has been raising money for the theatre almost every year, making 2020 the 15th Anniversary. In that time, Divas! has raised over half a million dollars for RLT programs, making it the most successful fundraiser ever at RLT. Thank you to ALL the Divas that have given so generously of their time, talent, and fundraising skills over the years.

Divas! 2020 will officially be added to the history books as the first ever fully virtual Divas performance! Featuring both live and pre-recorded clips, we are excited to provide a safe way for all to enjoy tonight’s program by livestreaming on both Facebook and YouTube.

Please donate tonight. During this especially difficult time for the arts, live theatre needs your help now more than ever before to continue its mission to entertain and educate.
